Steering the ship

The course of the ss Rotterdam was settled on the bridge. The helm had been delivered by Sperry, connected with the steering-gear, made by John Hastie & Co Ltd. of Greenock. The steering-gear moved the rudder of 22 metric tons. In a  documentary film of Ryan Derks, our volunteer Jan Egberts explains how it worked (only Dutch spoken). The next pictures have been made by Klaas Krijnen:

The helm on the bridge.

The steering-gear on C deck aft.

The rudder of 22.000 kilo, length 7,5 meter, width 4,5 meter.
